At the end of April, Tyler and I welcomed two kittens into our home. Milo (white/grey) and Marty (black/white). We chose these names as both are characters played by Michael J. Fox, whom we are both huge fans of.
During the time we've had them, we began wondering.... How do we know our cats love us? I did some research into cat gestures and thankfully, I recognised a lot of these signs in our cats.
Here are 5 ways cats tend to show you love...
1) Exposed Belly
Marty tends to give us a flash of his tummy when he's feeling loving. Cats, like many other animals don't just expose their tummy to anyone. This is pure trust and a really good indicator as to their comfort around you.
2) Kneading Your Legs
Both Milo and Marty love needing our legs once they get themselves into a comfortable position for a long nap. This is considered one of the main ways a cat tells you they love you. Unfortunately, the harder they kneed the more they love you, so you can expect to get some sharp claws digging into your flesh!
This may seem like an odd behaviour, but this is really how cats show you they care. They'll push their head into your hands or give you a head-butt directly to your face. Cats have concentrated glands in their head and neck, they're rubbing their scent on you.
4) Staring Directly Into Your Eyes
When they stare and take a long time to blink, this is a very positive sign of love. Some experts say it's like a cat giving you kisses.
5) Rubbing Against Your Legs
When your cat just can't seem to get enough of your legs, this is a very good sign. Milo will dart in-between my legs or sit underneath me when I'm crouching or kneeling. It's very important to let your cat rub up against you.
Paying attention to these small cat gestures is very important for you and your cat to bond.
